Chapter 10

For the next two weeks, Nora received a phone call or text message every day from Barak. As far as she knew, he stayed away from the hospital, but it wasn’t a sure thing. He procured her call schedule somehow and kept trying to invite himself over to have dinner with her. She shut him down and continued to study at the library, which she hoped he also didn’t follow her to.

He managed to get himself invited to her parent's house, and they kept messaging her about this lovely gentleman they met from New York, Barak Perez.

She went to the Sephardic synagogue for the long Yom Kippur services. There was no point in hiding from him, and it would decrease the chances her parents would find her to convince her to meet Barak from Brooklyn. She fasted all twenty-five hours and contemplated whether or not this was the path Hashem placed before her.

The following Saturday, she accepted an invitation to have a picnic lunch in his sister’s back yard. Barak and Yeshi had built quite the sukkah for the upcoming festivities. She bundled up in her winter jacket and thought about what a terrible idea this was. It was pretty cold.

Barak brought her a thermos of spiced apple cider to go with their meal. They sat on the blanket and made small talk under the watchful and hopeful eyes of his family who smartly ate indoors.

Of course, no one could resist the urge to push things along. Aviygale stuck her head outside and informed them the rest of the family was going to have dessert at a house a few blocks away.

Everything was fine. A regular proper courtship pushed along by every single meddling neighbor and relative.

It stopped being fine when a car backfired.

In a split second, Barak had tackled her onto the ground and was searching the surroundings. He yelled something in Hebrew that sounded like “Gunshot. Get me backup!”

She landed with a puff of air and was acutely aware of his body on top of hers.

It wasn't even sexual. His body was tense in a frantic race to fight or flee. There was coiled power as he prepared to defend them from a threat. He was somewhere else, a place where she was not able to follow.

“Barak? Where are you?” Nora asked in English and tugged on his sleeve. He wasn't moving. She tried Hebrew, “Come back to me!”

There was no response. Wherever he was, her words didn't penetrate that fog.

With more daring than she expected out of herself, she put her hands around his shoulders and pulled his head down to kiss hers.

Their lips met, and he went completely still.

And then the maelstrom.

He was suddenly plundering her mouth, tongue inside of her lips, scrambling to embrace her closer. Her kisses in the past had been nothing like this. She couldn't get closer than close. Her hands did something because they got under his jacket somehow. One of his hands wrapped itself in her hair, messing up her ponytail.
